Exhibition: Mrs Delany and her Circle
Sir John Soane’s Museum, 13 Lincoln’s Inn Fields, London WC2A 3BP
19 February – 1 May 2010.

Book coverLady Llanover was a great-great niece of Mrs Delany, née Mary Granville (1700-1788), and this exhibition is the first one to survey her entire life and the full range of her creative endeavours. In her will, Lady Llanover ‘bequeathed to the Trustees of the British Museum the cabinet and stand at Llanover containing the unique collection of plants and flowers from nature by Mrs Delany, which it was the express wish of George III should be preserved in the British Museum as a standard work of art …. and to the National Portrait Gallery the portrait at Great Stanhope Street of  Mary Granville (Mrs Delany) by Opie.’

Our member, the distinguished writer, Ruth Hayden, who is another descendant of Lady Llanover, is the author of Mrs Delaney, her life and her flowers (Colonnade Books 1988).

Lady Llanover’s monumental The Autobiography and Correspondence of Mary Granville  was published in a new edition in January 2009.
